The XM8 is an experimental weapon that was being developed by the U.S. Army to replace the M16 and M4. The XM8 was a variant of the kinetic energy module of the previous experimental OICW program of the 1990s. The XM8 was designed to be modular allowing it be easily configured to perform in a variety of roles from a PDW (personal defense weapon) to a squad heavy support rifle. The program was ultimately canceled in 2005.
The XM8 is a unique looking rifle and has been featured in several movies and video games including Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 series.
